Precisely! Great comment Ruth. Many of the hummingbirds do not migrate and so it doesn't hurt to leave them out all winter. I often do and they keep coming!

Yes, I agree that we absolutely need to keep our feeders up for about 2 weeks after we see our last hummer. Many people tell us to take them down for fear of keeping the hummingbirds from migrating. We need to give these exceptionally smart birds more credit. They will follow their instinct to migrate and need all of the nectar they can get to make the remarkable journey.

Great info, I didn't know a lot of that stuff about woodpeckers. And I wasn't aware that you needed to clean hummingbird feeders that often. I've seen this hummingbird feeder from Perky Pet that looks like the easiest way to clean. Ever use them?

Telescope binoculars are much better for birding or even astronomy unless you are a professional. I just can't look through the small lenses.

Hi, Susan,

I did a Google search for bird blogs and got a return of more than 5 million. Yours was second or third on the first page.

I'm the world's foremost amateur wild-bird feeder. I started back in April and have continued to buy a little more equipment as the months pass.

I just discovered your blog today, but I've all ready learned a lot by reading just a few of the entries. I appreciate your passion for wild birds.

I'll subscribe to your RSS feed to keep up with your entries.
