by: Jean Woods

Wow, it’s gotten cold around here in a hurry. Maybe the grosbeaks had it right. The whole flock left about a month early. All of a sudden the wooden bird feeders still have food in them by the time the sun goes down and there are no bright yellow clowns in my garden fountain, I am so sad. I miss their silliness. For some reason, they left behind one single pair of fledglings born this year. I have no idea why. They looked lonely sitting on one of the ornamental bird feeders. They stayed for an extra 2 weeks but now they are gone too.So now that everyone is gone I have clean up the yard. It’s time to put away the decorative bird feeders, well, except two for the winter birds. They get cranky if the seed runs out. I keep the 2 sturdiest wooden bird feeders full for them. If I can I take them down I will put a fresh seal of non-toxic wood sealer. But as always I will have to replace a few bird feeders if only because I want a new look or a different ornamental bird feeder. The garden bird fountains need to be scrubbed and put away for the winter as well. I have one birdbath fountain that I keep heated for those cold winter days to come, the birdies love that warm water, but we don’t need it yet.

Right now all the residents are feasting on Mother Natures’ bounty so my seed budget has dropped way down. However, after last week’s cold snap I will have to be on the lookout for the bears until it gets cold enough for them to nap. Rumor has it we have a momma with triplets but that is very rare. We have at least one little bear breaking into houses for goodies in the neighborhood.

I am looking for the perfect winter bird feeder. I find that I may just have to design my own. I have found many great feeders at Birdbathplus.com but this one continues to elude me. When I find it, or design it, I will make sure that you can get one too.

Our birdy feeders have been seemingly sparse lately, or so we thought but then we realized we have attracted bully birds to our porch. The crows have always been a welcome bird. For the most part they do not harm or disturb the other little birds. We began feeding them and then branched out to other birds. Soon, we had many birds and the pigeon showed up. Again, they came but did not disturb the other birds. They ate and left. So, we did not fret about them. But now a host of House Sparrows and a chattering of European Starlings have showed up and well, these birds are menacing. They swoop in and frighten off the small birds. They even chased off our frequenter female Downy Woodpecker today. =/ We are going to take the bird feeders down till these birds leave. Then try again.

Here are some of the birds we saw this week–both good and bad:

Review: This house is great. It holds up to 5lbs of bird seed! FIVE POUNDS! That feeds a lot of birds. It also has two suet cages—one on each end for birds to enjoy the extra energy boost as well. It is made of cedar and has a nice deep green roof which lifts on one side for easy refilling. The hard plastic slates come out for easy cleaning as well. It really is just a nice feeder. I can’t wait for my birds to notice it.

Review: We were putting bird seed on our ledge but the neighbors below began to get suspicious of the daily sunflower seeds shower—so we opted to get a ground feeder to contain the seed damage. Thus, we got this feeder. It is good for ground-dwelling birds. You can use this feeder in three ways: on a pole, on the ground (like I do) or hanging (it comes with a strong cable attached). For now, we are using it as a ground feeder—utilizing the legs. If the birds indicate this is not a good spot for them, we will try hanging it next. A word of caution: DO NOT fill it inside—the platform is made out of a hard mesh which keeps most seeds in but not the dust—that will end up under the feeder.

Again, Birds-Out-Back acknowledge my order almost immediately and shipped it within a day or two. I received it well-packed and ready to go! I really enjoy working with this company. Thanks Birds-Out-Back! My birdies thank you again too!
