OH! YAY! Since we put out the peanuts without shells and the new bird feeder, we have had so many new visitors. These wonderfully interesting feathered friends we have seen stop in…

New Birds Visit Our Feeder

We decided to try putting out peanuts without shells instead of the normal with shells. The crows came and were as happy as ever, even more raucous actually. They were cawing up a storm!! Maybe that was a thank you to us. =) Less work. They gobbled them and lingered a lot longer today than usual. They were eating and socializing. It was fun to watch.

And we got two new visitors today; the Stellar Jay and *I think* a Brewer’s Blackbird. I think it had to have been the new food. These two birds also like seeds but I think the feeder is too small for them to eat from. The Brewer’s Blackbird did try to eat from it but was frightened away when the crows returned. I guess our crows are bratty birds and they want to keep their food source to themselves. =) We love them all the same.

What a fun bird feeding day it was today!

The White-billed crow (creative commons)

The White-billed crow can only be found in central part of the Solomon Islands. They are officially called Corvus woodfordi. It is a stocky short bird who prefers the forest. It has a squared off tail and a big head. It has a distinct deep and curved pale ivory colored bill with a darker tip, resembling the coloring of wing tip shoes to me. =) Overall it is glossy black with a purplish-green gloss to the head and purple gloss to the rest of it. The iris of the White-Billed Crow is pale gray or white and the legs and feet are black.

The White-billed Crow lives in small families and together they look for insects and fruit to eat.

There is not a lot known about its breeding habits and behavior since it lives so far up in the trees and doesn’t come down much to be observed.
